Lancaster University commits to reducing carbon emissions
Lancaster University is set to significantly reduce its carbon footprint following a £5m funding award from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). The proposed project is to develop two 2.3MW wind turbines on the University's Hazelrigg site to the east of the M6 motorway.
LEC consultancy pays off for hotel
Lancaster University has helped a Lake District hotel reduce its carbon footprint and save around £40,000 a year with the installation of a biomass boiler. The Langdale Estate near Ambleside decided to switch from gas to the wood-burning boiler following a review by graduate consultant Ciaran Burns from the Lancaster Environment Centre.
Small green companies take on big export challenge
A network of small and start-up companies, all based at LEC, are proving that firms don't have to be big to export. The smallest has just one member of staff and the youngest was established only last year, nevertheless all have turned to UK Trade and Investment (UKTI) to sound out their chosen markets and establish contacts who can help send their goods and services overseas.
Lancaster University and China link to help put food on the table
Lancaster researchers are teaming up with their Chinese counterparts to help meet the growing challenge of feeding the world. The University has received a £1.33m Research Council UK Science Bridge award to improve UK innovation links with China to addresses perhaps the greatest challenge facing humankind.
Grower of the year award for LEC honorary research fellow
Rob Jacobson of RJC Ltd, an honorary research fellow at Lancaster University has won the Grower of the Year award. An award that celebrates the best examples of business excellence, innovation, technical expertise and personal achievement within UK horticulture production.
Graduate Consultant helps paper company implement environmental policy
A LEC Graduate Consultant has helped local paper processing and printing firm implement and promote the environmental credentials portrayed in their products.

You can use the facilities at the Lancaster Environment Centre to host events and meetings for your company. Our training suites and board room provide a full multimedia projection system and we can provide in house catering for your events.

Energy from Waste: Advanced Thermal Technologies
Thursday 18th June 2009
There are a number of technologies available for the conversion of waste material to energy including biological processes and conventional mass burn incineration.
This one day meeting organised by the Environment Group and Process Engineering Group of SCI in conjunction with Lancaster Environment Centre will consider the advanced thermal technologies which are rapidly developing, including: Gasification, Plasma Gasification and Pyrolysis.
This meeting is aimed at Technology Providers, R&D Houses, Local Authorities and Waste Management Companies.
North West Business Environment Awards 2009

The awards celebrate the region's carbon-crusaders; waste-recyclers; energy-savers; eco-buildings; green-purchasers; green-technologists and eco-innovators. It's the region's only gathering of green business heroes.
This year the awards have teamed up with the Envirenergy exhibition, showcasing the Northwest's innovative green technology. You can visit or exhibit at Envirenergy during the day, then attend the awards in the evening. Both events take place at Old Trafford football club on June 25th. The award ceremony runs from 3.30-7pm.
Catchment science for sustainable water management

As different aspects of catchment science and practice develop, catchment based approaches to water quality improvement are increasing. A significant number now appear in the draft UK water company plans submitted to OFWAT. This event is designed to explore how developments in catchment science are influencing both policy and practice. Invited presentations will also provide delegates with a rare opportunity to hear about a range projects from across the UK.
Working effectively in SIEFs and Consortia

The workshop provides an in-depth exploration of the legal responsibilities and the practical issues involved in the management of your SIEF and consortia activities. Breakout sessions allow you to discuss and debate different scenarios and your own experiences of being part of a SIEF. These discussions will enable you to gain insight into differing viewpoints.

Managing REACH: practical help for potential registrants

This course is a must for anyone who will be potentially registering chemical substances under REACH. With pre-registration over this workshop examines what will happen next, how you should be planning and what is involved throughout the ongoing REACH timeline.
Delivered by an expert REACH practitioner, the day focuses on registration whilst taking a close look at SIEFs and including a practical demonstration of REACH-IT and IUCLID5.
