LEC research indicates climate change in Northern England
Work carried out by LEC PhD student Emma Ferranti as part of a team of UK researchers has shown that the frequency of heavy rainfall during winter months over the uplands of North England has "significantly" increased in recent years. A BBC article reported that the work, published in the International Journal of Climatology, indicates that the shift coincided with an increase in westerly weather systems over the region. The research was based on analysing long term daily rainfall records and underlines the value of such long-term monitoring and the maintenance of records from key historic sites.
