Research Interests
Using mathematical models to describe the behaviour of environmental systems; these can range from simple one-line equations, to complex, distributed models run on powerful computers. At the moment, my main interest is in using the techniques of control systems engineering together with the statistical methods of time-series analysis: this broadly describes the Data-Based Mechanistic (DBM) approach to modelling pioneered by Prof. Peter Young and others. At present, I am working in a team applying the DBM modelling approach to generate a real-time flood warning system for the river Severn. I am also working with Dr. Jarvis (my PhD supervisor) to describe, in numerical terms, the interrelation between global carbon emissions, mean global surface temperature and emissions abatement, a (hopefully) negative feedback process.
