Dr Mark Hounslow

Senior Research Fellow

Research and Related Interests

My main interest is in magnetic geochronology at a variety of times scales- from archaeological to geological. I have also focused on sediment tracing from source to sink studies both in the marine and terrestrial aquatic environments, interpreting magnetic proxies for understanding environmental change in sediment and soil records, and sediment micro and macrofabric for environmental interpretation.

I am the vice chair of the Subcommission on Triassic Stratigraphy (of the International Commission on Stratigraphy) and am also involved in collaborative international efforts of the boundary task forces for the Triassic, Jurassic and Carboniferous Subcommissions. I have also served as steering group member for several international conferences in the UK and Svalbard (Norway), and acted as a session co-convenor at the EGU. Given invited talks at the AGU and IUGG internal conferences, along with at national conferences and workshops. I am a member of the Geological Society of London Stratigraphy Commission, which informs government and the activities of the British Geological survey. I am a contributing member to the Triassic chapter of the Petroleum Geological Atlas of the Southern Permian Basin.

Research income, since 2001 has totalled £157,000, from a variety of sources. I have authored 81 publications, with 28 of these being book chapters.

I have taught of wide variety of 1st to 3rd year modules ranging from environmental magnetics, physical geography, geophysics, solid-earth geology to sedimentology.
