RCUK Fellow in Environmental Informatics

Research Interests

As a member of the Centre for Environmental Informatics and the Environmental Geoscience research theme within LEC, my research involves understanding physical aspects of Earth surface change, with emphasis on volcanic processes. Areas of particular interest are lava flows and volcanic domes, coastal erosion and sediment dynamics, and the development of appropriate and adaptive field methodologies.

My research is underpinned by field measurements of active processes using laser scanning, close-range photogrammetry, mm-wave radar, infrared and remote time-lapse imaging, and UAVs. Current work is focussed on coastal erosion at Morecambe Bay (U.K.), lava flows at Mount Etna (Italy) and dome growth at Soufrière Hills volcano (Montserrat), with techniques also being applied to gas loss from peat bogs, ice ablation, cliff erosion, the deformation of volcanic edifices and landslide dynamics. Other areas of interest include the fluid dynamics behind volcano-seismicity and particle aggregation and electrification in volcanic plumes.
