Studying for a PhD at LEC
Research projects leading to the award of a PhD are available in all areas of the biological, environmental and geographical aspects of environmental science.
The main body of LEC research is conducted within our 5 inter-disciplinary research Themes:
- Atmospheric Sciences
- Catchment and Aquatic Processes
- Environmental Geosciences
- Environment and Society
- Organisms and the Environment
The expectation is that a PhD will be completed within three years full time, six years part time.
Assessment
Assessment is by examination of a thesis, either written in conventional format or compiled from a number of published research papers with some linking commentary. The latter format has proved to be highly popular and successful among our recent students. As well as training in a specific and specialised topic, PhD students also receive more general training in a range of research methods and skills.
Funding
Funded and self funded PhD's are available. Full studentships (fees and maintenance grant) are available to UK and EU candidates who have been ordinarily resident in the UK throughout the 3-year period immediately preceding the date of an award.
EU candidates who have not been ordinarily resident in the UK for the last 3 years are eligible for "tuition fees-only" awards (no maintenance grant).
Overseas applicants are not eligible for funded PhD's unless stated. Please consult our funding page for further sources of funding.
Applications
Applicants for a PhD need a 2:1 degree, or 2:2 and Masters degree. To apply please consult our application procedure information.
