Water

Water is essential to Earth’s life support systems, for humans and the natural world. If we can understand better the processes governing water quantity and availability at all scales, we can help maintain healthy freshwaters and adequate water supplies, reduce risks of flooding and provide and support sustainable sources of energy.

CEH are investigating the processes on land and in the air that affect the water cycle, and also affect water quality. We can then apply this improved knowledge to the sustainable management of water catchment areas and their water resources.

We are focusing specifically on:

  • linking the behaviour and fate of pollutants to the risk of ecological harm.
  • Understanding the aquatic chemistry and organism function within catchments, to assess ecological pressures and impacts.
  • Developing next-generation methods for managing high river flows.
  • Developing new process-based models for assessing catchment management options and solutions.
