Data Sources

There are a wide range of data resources available, both freely available on the internet, available through internet services where registration is required for data sets available for academic use, and through databases held within the department both digitally and on hard copy.

Details of most of the main digitally held data sets within the department can be found in the data directory held on the department server \\geog-files\gisdata\data_directory.xls. Please note that this is not an exhaustive list.

A wide range of paper maps are also held, including reasonable UK, coverage of OS map sheets particularly for the 1920's and 1950's. Also held here are a range of soil and geology maps. Data for non UK countries is also available, however, coverage is very variable.

Data Services - Registration Required

There are a number of key data providers for UK based data, which members of the university can access by registering free of charge. These can be accessed via OneSearch:

  • Edina Digimap - A wide range of digital OS products including a range of historic data are available through this service.
  • UK Borders - Boundary data (current and historic) for census and administrative boundaries are available through this site.
  • CASWEB - UK census data is available through this service, this can easily be downloaded and linked to boundary data from UK Borders for Mapping purposes.
  • LANDMAP - Providing a range of Remotely Sensed images of the UK
