Biological Sciences at LEC
Biologists are currently facing many challenges, whether it is saving threatened species, the sustainable production of food, or curing diseases. At Lancaster, we offer a range of flexible Biology degrees that equip our students with the skills they need to address these real-world issues and to deal with today’s multidisciplinary work environment.
Our degrees allow students to learn about cutting edge research in areas relevant to today’s changing world through a combination of specialised courses, project work, and UK-based and international field courses. This website allows you explore how a Biology degree from Lancaster can develop your interest in the living world and provides you with an insight into the diverse range of exciting careers that a Biology degree can open up for you.
Our Courses
Our modern flexible degree schemes mean that our graduates are well equipped to deal with today’s multidisciplinary work environments. In the first year, it is possible to study just Biology related subjects or to use the flexibility of the Lancaster system to study another subject of your choice, e.g. Computing, Psychology, Geography, French.
In the second and third year, students take more specialised courses in their chosen subject area and this culminates in their choice of research project. Projects may be field or laboratory based, computer based or based on critical review of published information and data. In combination, the specialised courses and dissertation projects allow students to focus on their particular interests.
New Facilities
Lancaster University has recently spent millions of pounds updating our teaching and research facilities. Our new laboratories in the Faraday Building can hold up to 100 students and contain all of the equipment needed for the practical sessions associated with each module. Students will develop skills in a wide range of laboratory techniques, which will help them in their third year research projects and beyond.
Career Prospects
More than two thirds of our graduates pursue Biology related careers such as research (academic, industrial, hospital, field), teaching, or environmental management. In fact many of our students choose to pursue research through further study to gain MSc or PhD qualifications. The remaining graduates put the broad base of transferable skills, learnt during their degree, to good use in other careers such as finance, management and marketing.
